New Traditions

There’s nothing like a holiday to bring up all the complications around trying to feed a diverse group of people. Although I’m the “weird” vegan (who also can’t eat wheat), I am not the pickiest member of my family when it comes to food.

Traditional Christmas dinner, for us, had become too full of fussing in the kitchen for a meal that many of my family members didn’t actually want to eat. As I said in a previous post, Mexican food is one of the best options for omnivorous and vegan folks to all meet at the table, find something to eat, and be happy. So last year, I came up with the (brilliant, IMHO) idea to have a taco bar for Christmas dinner.

It was incredibly successful. My young nephews, who don’t want anything green to touch their lips, can have only meat and cheese; my sister (ovo-lacto vegetarian) who loves her meat subsitutes makes her separate “meat” and uses the rest of the traditional toppings, the regular old omnivores eat regular old tacos, and I have lots of options to make my taco vegan and celiac-friendly.

To make it a little fancier, I bought this 3 Tier Oval Chip And Dip Set (times two!) to hold the toppings. I love how it made everything accessible and still attractively displayed.

Aerial view: It looks like I might need to invest in another one to hold all the potential add-ons. (Not pictured: Omnivore stuff: the meat(regular beef and “Beyond” meat for my ovo-lacto sister), and the cheese and rice. See why I think I need another dish!
My vegan version: refried beans, black beans, rice, lettuce, onion, tomatoes, avocado…

Since it went over so well, we have decided to do this every year now. That’s how a tradition starts, right? Here’s to less stress and more time enjoying ourselves!
