Living, Eating, and Working…a lot.

Well.

Hello. Or, hello, again, if you’ve been with me for a bit.

I started this blog as a way to document my journey through the world as a vegan—traveling, eating out, finding places to eat, and occasionally discovering something wonderful where I hadn’t expected to find anything at all.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped writing.

I never really meant to. I fell out of the habit and it became hard to pick it back up again, though the intention was always there.

While thinking about what happened to this blog, I remembered something fairly significant. My last blog post was at the end of 2019. What made me stop posting? Then, I remembered. The world shut down.

Suddenly, I wasn’t traveling. I wasn’t eating out. For a long time, there didn’t seem to be much to write about.

Eventually the world opened again.

But, the blog didn’t.

Life got busy. I’ve been living, eating, and working. A lot. Traveling when I can. Cooking things I loved, eating things I enjoyed and some I regretted, and continuing to navigate life as a vegan in a world that still very much isn’t set up for me.

When I started this blog, finding vegan food while traveling often required research, backup plans, snacks, and a willingness to accept that dinner might be a baked potato. Things have (thankfully) changed. It’s never been easier to be a vegan, at least in more densely populated places. (To be clear, I still love potatoes.)

I still have more to say. More places to go, more food to cook (and eat!). Though I’m not making any biweekly promises, I’ll try to start sharing again: where I am, what I’m eating, and my thoughts about vegan life.

Recently, I’ve been thinking about how food is linked to our emotions and memory. The foods that belonged to childhood, holidays, family, particular people, and particular kitchens. The comfort food. Foods that felt like love, the textures and flavors. Some of them I haven’t eaten in decades. Some I’ve tried to recreate in vegan versions. Some exist mostly in memory.

And I’ve realized I’d like to write about those, too. I’ll share my experiences trying to recreate those memories with some (likely quite vague suggestions of) how I’m remaking them. I think I already know what’s first.

Much has changed since my last post. I’ve even polished up the apple.

But I’m still a vegan, living in a world that isn’t.
And maybe it’s time I started writing about it again.
